Emoji -なぜ絵文字という日本語が世界に知られたか-

Sushi, Kimono, Matcha のように、海外でも日本語の言い方で知られるものは多くあります。日本の伝統的なものが多いイメージですが、実は絵文字も Emojiと呼ばれています。

（動画ではその前提知識はあるものとして話を進めていますが）

なぜemojiという日本語が世界に広がったかご存知ですか？

現代のスマートフォンが広まる前、日本では独自の携帯電話市場が広がっていました。

1999年からiモードで端末がインターネットに繋がり、私も自分のホームページを作って携帯で接続していたのを覚えています。

ワンセグでテレビが見れたり、防水だったり、おサイフケータイなど様々な機能がありました。その時から、この様な絵文字や、ときには動く”デコ絵文字”を使ってメールを送っていました。

iPhoneが日本に上陸したとき、日本の実業家の孫さんが、日本市場では絵文字を導入するようにアップルにかけあったことで、iOS2.2から日本語に設定したときだけ絵文字が使える状態でした。

iOS9からはどの言語でも導入され、これがemojiという言葉が広く使われるようになった理由であり、絵文字そのものに日本語のものが含まれている理由です。

（よく意味が分からず使われているものも多くあります　笑）

Do you know why Emoji, a Japanese word, is spread to the world?

Long before modern phones, we had a unique phone industry in Japan. Like each device was connected to Internet from 1999, and I remember having my own blog maintained with my phone.

Some had a TV function, waterproof or mobile payment, and we were emailing a lot using these emojis, or even Deco moji, the moving ones.

When iPhone arrived, Mr. Son, a successful businessman in Japan, convinced Apple to enable emojis for the Japanese market, and from iOS 2.2 (2008) emojis were available only when users set Japanese as a language.

From iOS9(2015) it’s available for any languages. And this is why the word emoji is widely used and some signs are in Japanese because of this history.
