城崎に行ったら旅の概念が変わった話

カニもシーズンを迎え、多くの人で賑わう城崎に行ってきました。今回ご縁があって泊めていただいたのが「小林屋」さん。

18世紀初頭から約300年にわたって旅館を営む老舗が、有形文化財である建物をうまく活用して2022年に大リニューアルをされています。

その現オーナーであるご夫妻と夕食を共にさせていただき、城崎のこと、歴史ある旅館のこと、地域の課題や今後など、本当に幅広くお話を聞かせてもらいました。

自分が個人的に旅行に来るだけでは 見て、読んで、食べるのが旅の大部分だけれど。こうして人に出会って、話を聞いてみて、新たな旅の楽しみ方を知りました。

一番印象に残ったのは、

城崎では地域の内外、そして職種の壁をこえて「一緒にオモシロイこと」をしてること。長くなりすぎるので、この詳細は次の投稿にて。

ただ、とにかく小林屋さんでの体験が最高で。

「太陽」をテーマにした照明、立派な梁、そして和紙に包まれて寝られる寝室と お部屋が最高に贅沢なのはもちろんなんだけど、

夕刻から下駄の音が鳴り響き、外を見下ろす人がいて。不思議と時間がゆっくりと過ぎていく感覚。小説などで耳にした「逗留」って、こんな世界だったのかしら などと考えながら 眺めていました。

翌朝、広い窓から見えた雪化粧をした城崎もまた、美しかったです。

Kinosaki, the game changer

I like traveling as it’s simply pleasant to discover new sceneries, people and histories, but visiting Kinosaki showed me another world.

We stayed at the Kobayashi-ya ryokan, Japanese inn, which has 300 years history. They renovated their building last year mixing traditional and modern style.

Luckily we could have dinner with the couple who run this ryokan and learned a lot about Kinosaki area, the family business lasting centuries, and some local challenges over the great dinner.

Seeing and reading can happen in typical trips, but meeting people and listening to their stories was new to me and felt like I discovered something very important.

Anyways staying at the Kobayashi-ya was superb. Seeing people wearing Yukata and hearing the iconic sound of Geta shoes they wear, I felt like I was seeing the world hundreds of years ago.

It was such a nice gift for us that this nostalgic scenery was covered with snow the next morning. Speechless.
