なぜ日本文化を英語で発信するのか -Who is Kaai?-

自分の留学経験（計2年）や、各国への旅行を通して得た国際感覚をもとに、日本の言語や社会、宗教感などについて自分なりに考察した動画を出し始めて約２年半になります。

もともとは日本文化にも全然興味はなく、たまたま大学では京都に来ていたものの、特にお寺や神社にも行っていませんでした。それが大学２年生のとき、初めてカナダの小さな港町（Hlifax）に留学してみて 自分がいかに日本のことを知らないか、そして京都という街がいかに文化財や世界遺産の宝庫かということを知り、帰国後から少しずつ巡り始めました。

当時はお寺での振る舞いや作法などには自信がないし、ましてやお寺の宗派や神社の神様のことなど分かりもせず。ただ静かで落ち着く空間を楽しんでいたけれど、徐々にそこもちゃんと理解したいと思い、本や講座に通って少しずつ勉強を始めました。

そうして勉強してみて、専門用語の多さや説明の分かりにくさに愕然とし、これは日本人はおろか外国人にはもう全然伝わっていないんじゃないか、と思いました。はるばる遠い日本にまで来た外国人たちが、日本の表面的な部分だけを見て「日本は見た」と思ってほしくない。幸い日本好きの外国人はたくさんいるから、その人たちが表面的な美しさ／珍しさだけでなく、その背景や理由をもう少し理解できたら、もっと日本のことを好きになってくれるんじゃないか・・。

そして、真っ向から伝統文化が云々と言っていても気にも留めない日本人たちも、外国人たちが関心を寄せる姿を見れば、自国文化に目が向いたり、自分たちのことを誇りに思えるんじゃないか。

そうして日本が元気になってくれたら嬉しいと思い、SNSを使って英語での情報発信を始めました。正直私の英語は完璧じゃないのだけれど、それでも世界にメッセージは伝わるんだということを、いやむしろ文法や発音が完璧でも中身がないと何にもならないということを伝えたいです。

ありがたいことにTikTokでは開始一週間で１万人の方にフォローをいただき、IGでも多くの方にサポートいただいています。

私は自分の発信内容がニッチなことも知っているし、有名になりたいという願望があるわけでもないので、今は同じように世界や文化に興味がある方々が出会えるようなイベントを企画したり、国内外に情報発信したい企業のマーケティングアドバイスをしたりしながら、ゆっくり動画を作っています。

海外経験のある、才能豊かな日本人たちが、死んだ魚のような目をして働くことのないように。素晴らしい価値を生み出している伝統産業が、後継者不足で途絶えていくことがないように。

一人の旅好きとして、日本も世界も各地が多様であってほしいと思っている＆着物や伝統工芸/文化が大好きなので、自分の活動を通じて、少しでもこれらに関心が高まってほしいと願っています。

この先どこにたどり着くかは分かりませんが、見つけた世界や出会う方々とオモシロイことを作り出していけますように。

It has been 2.5 years since I started creating content on Social Media, but I’ve never talked about who I am and what I do properly, so here it goes!

I’m Kaai, I’m sharing Japanese culture in English with an international perspective, which I gained from my studying/ traveling abroad experiences.

Originally, I was not interested in Japanese culture at all, and although I happened to be in Kyoto for university, I had not visited any temples or shrines in particular. Then, when I was a sophomore at university, I studied abroad for the first time in a small port town in Canada called Halifax. I realized how little I knew about Japan and how Kyoto is a treasure house of cultural assets and world heritage.

At the time, I was not confident about my behavior or manners at temples, much less about the sects of temples or the deities of shrines. I was just enjoying the quiet and relaxing atmosphere, but gradually I decided that I wanted to understand these things properly, so I began to study little by little by attending books and courses.

I was astonished at the amount of technical terms and the difficulty of understanding the explanations, and I thought that this was not at all clear to foreigners, even to Japanese people. I do not want foreigners who have come all the way to distant Japan to think that they have "seen Japan" by looking at only the superficial aspects of Japan. Fortunately, there are many foreigners who like Japan, and if they could understand a little more about the background and reasons behind the beauty and rarity of Japan, not just the superficial beauty/rarity, they would like Japan even more....

And if the Japanese who don't care about traditional culture when they hear about it directly, they may start to pay attention to their own culture and feel proud of themselves when they see that foreigners are interested in it. My English is not perfect, I’m aware, but I want to prove that still it conveys important messages. Or in other words, perfect grammar or pronunciation is nothing if the message itself is worthless.

Thankfully, 10,000 people followed me on TikTok within the first week of starting, and I have the support of many people on IG.

I know that my content is niche and I have no desire to be famous, so currently I organize events which attendances can meet people who value international culture/ Japanese traditions while I help marketing for clients. (Thus my content creations got slower.)

I hope that talented Japanese people with overseas experience will not work with eyes like dead fish(it may be a Japanese expression). I hope that traditional industries that create great value will not cease to exist due to a lack of successors.

As a person who loves traveling, I want every city in Japan and in the world to be unique with local traditions and I hope my content will push it even a bit.

I don’t know where I end up, but I want to create something interesting with the world I discover or people I meet.
